【About Choju Giga】 Choju Giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans) is a set of ink-painted picture scrolls created between the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. They are preserved at Kōzan-ji Temple in Kyoto and consist of four scrolls, known as Scrolls A, B, C, and D. Among them, Scroll A is the most well-known, depicting small animals such as rabbits and frogs engaging in lively, human-like activities. The scrolls feature dynamic brushwork and techniques similar to those used in modern manga, which is why Choju Giga is often regarded as Japan’s oldest manga.
